Summer Seminar 2023

Special Summer Clinician: Bob Bidewell 
is retired from almost forty years in the field of church music. He has a Master of Music Education degree from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro and obtained the Service Playing Certificate from the American Guild of Organists.  He served on the board of the Arkansas Chapter of the Handbell Musicians of America for many years and has served as Dean of the Central Arkansas Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.  He is a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Little Rock where he remains active in the choir, the handbell choir, and occasionally subbing on the organ bench. Bob plays bass clarinet and keyboard in the Little Rock Winds and is active in the local community theatre scene.

Class Breakout Options

  • ​"From the Ground Up: Fundamentals of Bell and Chime Ringing"​ A class for Beginning ringers on essential handbell and handchime techniques and for any who wish to strengthen their fundamental ringing techniques. 
  • "Ch-ch-ch Changes" Advanced bell changing techniques for all handbell registers. Class will be offered in the morning and afternoon, with different techniques taught at each class.
  • Advanced Conducting Techniques This class is for those already familiar with the fundamental conducting patterns. We will discuss and practice conducting gestures that are economical and descriptive of the work being conducted. Directors and ringers alike are welcome.
  • Handbell Maintenance Learn how to keep your handbell set ringing well for years to come!
  • Fundamentals of Conducting For both ringers and directors, this class teaches the fundamental conducting patterns and important basics such as preparatory beats. Ringers that understand the grammar of conducting will find following the director is easier as you learn the language of conducting gestures! Directors can strengthen their fundamentals in this class to gain confidence and clarity of gesture. 
  • Resources & Creative Use of Handbells in Worship Helpful resources for directors and suggestions for creating "awe" moments in worship.
